The cultivation of onions in the Canary Islands has been of great importance in the last few centuries, not only at the level of domestic consumption but also by its export to the Americas. However, its current economic importance is less than before, with the crop dedicated only to cover island consumption. In order to assess on this species the benefits of early inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi, both in the nursery phase and during field cultivation, a trial was designed under agroecological management. Seeds of 4 local varieties of onions (Lanzarote, Masca, Guayonje and Albina) were inoculated in seedbed with a local isolated of Glomus mosseae and subsequently transplanted to a plot with a random block design. At the end of the seedling stage, the effect of mycorrhization on seedling development and nutrition was evaluated. Two months after field transplantation, the bulbs were collected and variables related to postharvest quality such as weight, color, hardness, firmness, etc. were assessed. The conclusions demonstrate the benefits of symbiosis on the quantity and quality of the product collected and its opportunity as a routine practice in cultivation in our islands
