Introduction: Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and
mortality worldwide. It not only causes human losses and a decrease in the
quality of life of individuals, but also has consequences for public health and the
economy of all countries. Therefore, it is important to take measures to prevent
and treat this disease, and one way to do so is to focus on new technological
advances, such us nanoparticles.
Objectives: To carry out a systematic search in the main scientific databases to
investigate the efficacy of pharmacological treatments bases on nanoparticles in
atherosclerotic disease.
Material and methods: Systematic review of articles retrieved from the
bibliographic databases MEDLINE (PubMed), The Cochrane Library, Scopus,
and Web of Science until March 2023. The search equation was formulated using
the following MeSH terms: "Atherosclerosis", "Nanoparticles", "Therapeutics",
"Treatment Outcome", "Clinical Effectiveness", "Treatment Efficacy", and
"Clinical Efficacy", using the filter "Human”.
Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 4 studies were
accepted for review and critical analysis out of the 611 references. The included
studies were 3 randomized controlled trials and 1 pilot study. All of them are
written in English and aim to evaluate the efficacy of nanoparticle treatments for
atherosclerosis.
Conclusion: The use of nanoparticles for the treatment of atherosclerotic
disease has multiple applications. They can encapsulate different drugs and/or
be combined with other treatments such as plasmonic photothermal therapy. This
new world of nanotherapy is booming and shows promising findings for achieving
atheroregression of atherosclerotic plaques. However, much remains to be
investigated as future studies with a larger sample size, longer study period, etc.,
would be necessary to confirm the efficacy of these types of treatments.
