The memory of the myth of rock from the 70s is rusting, and cancel culture is responsible for
it. It is a mass movement boosted by the rise of social media which pursues any behavior that
threaten social well-being. It is a modern boycott, a support withdrawal for not acting
according to "what is right," where society demands a rational commitment to control
individuals' basic impulses for the greater good. This citizen's tool of justice polarizes a
society that sees its right to freedom of expression endangered by the possible repercussions
of expressing an opinion publicly and being considered incorrect by the masses. In a society
ruled by the terms of being politically correct, the rebellious and wild aesthetic followed by
musicians in the 70s has no place in our era. The chaos, excess, indecency, and immorality
associated with their behavior are no longer romanticized or excused under the name of rock
and roll. They are now expected to have the same social responsibility and ethical morals as
the rest of the citizens, humanizing the myth of rock and dismantling its deification. The rock
stars must adapt to the demands of the new millennium if they intend to survive. They will
have to shed the ego that a whole generation has fed and create rock that is not primarily supported by lust and excess. In this way, the entertainment industry rebuilds the archetype of
the rock star and turns the anomaly into a citizen of a society.
The rock god who broke musical instruments and destroyed hotel rooms as an artistic practice
is now dead; and their necrology was posted on Twitter.
