Introduction: Exercising is essential for health maintenance and disease prevention. Nevertheless, a lack of control over its practice, referred as exercise dependence in the literature, may lead to an undermine in sports performance, as well as health in all of its levels. Objectives: The main purpose of this study is to obtain the prevalence of risk of exercise dependence and assess its variations regarding sex and sport activity. Additionally we aim to evaluate its relationship with drive for thinness, drive for muscularity and attitude towards doping, as well as consumption of licit drugs, anxiolytics, analgesics and supplements. We also aim to assess if there is a difference in the proportion of the exercise dependence etiologies. Methods: 341 adults, who answered a questionnaire including the following questionnaires validated in Spanish: Exercise Dependence Scale Revised, Drive for Thinness, Drive for Muscularity and Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale, were included in our study. Non-parametric Spearman correlates, chi-squared tests and homogeneous subsets were calculated. Results: The prevalence of exercise dependence in our sample was 6%, without differences regarding sex. A significant higher percentage of the subjects at risk practiced fitness type sports compared to not at-risk subjects (37,5% vs 22,5%; p=0,04). Inside the group of people at-risk of exercise dependence, the prevalence of semiprofessionals was significantly higher than the one of amateurs (19,64% vs 11,34%; p<0,05). Significant positive correlates were found between exercise dependence symptoms and a more positive attitude towards doping (rho=0,225; p<0,001), drive for thinness (rho=0,319; p<0,001), and drive for muscularity (rho=0,366; p<0,001). There were no statistically significant differences for the consumptions of the substances studied between at-risk and not at-risk subjects, neither for the etiology of exercise dependence. Discussion and conclusions: Awareness campaigns for a healthy exercise patterns, taking risks into accountability are needed. According to our findings, those who are semiprofessionals and/or practicing fitness type sports may benefit more from such interventions. It is also recommended to screen for doping substances consumptions in those who are positive in the exercise dependence screening.
