On May 28, 2023, the local elections took place in Elche. In such elections, the role of
journalists is crucial to provide context, conduct analysis, and fact-check the politician's
discourse. Particularly, thanks to the possibilities offered by the internet and computing,
data has become a valuable tool for conducting analysis and uncovering stories that may
not be visible at first glance or even to a traditional journalist’s eye. In recent years, a
trend in journalism has emerged, aiming to approach elections from a statistical
standpoint and using probabilities to predict their outcomes. This movement originated
in the United States with statistician Nate Silver and his project FiveThirtyEight, and it
arrived in Spain through Kiko Llaneras and Borja Andrino in El País, as well as other data
analysts like Endika Núñez. Now, this idea is being applied at the local level, specifically
to the city of Elche.
