Saltmarshes are very frequent ecosystems in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula characterized by highly saline soils. In these habitats only halophytes grow in well-distributed communities along a salinity gradient. However, there is not any evidence in ecological studies about the biotic interactions between plant species in saltmarshes. Thus, the main objective of this study is to assess the relationships between halophyte species in these ecosystems to determine their effects on the height and area variability. For this, 10 individuals were randomly selected in dominant plant community and ecotones; and height, area and distance to the nearest neighbour measures were also recorded. Mixed ANOVAs in R were performed to observe effects of several predictors and their interactions on the height and area of the reference plants in the study. The results indicated that the Salicornia fruticosa-S. fruticosa interaction showed the highest values of height and area. Likewise, the Arthrocaulon macrostachyum-A. macrostachyum interaction showed the lowest height values, while the Limonium cossonianum-A. macrostachyum and L. cossonianum-Lygeum spartum interactions showed the lowest area values. The types of interaction and distance to the nearest individual had significant effects on the biotic factors of height, projection area and competition, as well as the interaction between height and area of the nearest individual. Hence, these variables have to be considered to determine the assembly rules of the plant community. Therefore, it is necessary highlighted the relevance of biotic studies on saline environments in order to have a better knowledge of these vulnerable ecosystems, which are more and more prone to disappear.
