In this study, the capability of detection of water stress in different physiological water stress indicators, such as predawn leaf water potential (Ψpd), midday stem water potential (Ψstem), maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS) and stomatal conductance (gs), was evaluated, at different levels of water stress. The experiment was performed between May and July on adult 'Verna' lemon trees (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. Fil.), grafted on sour orange (C. aurantium L.) rootstocks. Throughout the trial, two irrigation treatments were applied, control (100% crop evapotranspiration -ETc) and drought (0% ETc for 49 days and 100% ETc in the recovery period). During the experiment, in non-limiting soil water conditions, Ψstem, and MDS were more influenced by environmental conditions that Ψpd. The Ψpd was most correlated with the air temperature (T) at dawn (r2 = 0.64), while the Ψstem and MDS were better correlated with T at midday (r2 = 0.59 and r2 = 0.69 respectively). To assess the ability of detection the water stress of indicators, the signal intensity (SI), the coefficient of variation (CV), as well as and the sensitivity (S), for the different considered stress levels, were calculated; light (amount of available water - AWA 100% -25%), moderate (25% -10% AWA), severe (AWA 10% -5%) and recovery (AWA 5% -100%). The results showed that the ability to detect water stress of the studied indicators varied depending on the severity of the applied water stress. In this regard, the gs was the indicator that showed a bigger SI throughout the study. However, its reliability decreased from a moderate stress level, as a result of the great variability that their measures presented (CV≈29%). The MDS showed a good ability to detect water stress when the stress level was light although, as the stress was more severe, the SI decreased progressively until the end of the experiment, indicating a low sensitivity to detect water stress when this was moderate and / or severe. Regarding the indicators based on water potential, the Ψpd showed a good ability to detect water stress, as the SI progressively increased until the end of the experiment. However, Ψstem showed similar response to Ψpd until the water stress level was severe, when the SI stopped increasing
