The FM frequency band (Frequency Modulation) was used for the first time in university radio stations in 1987. From that moment on, it has been expanding to all universities in Spain to provide them with knowledge and culture. Radio was introduced in education with the purpose of becoming a medium in which society would actively participate playing an essential role and whose function would be to educate, inform, promote and defend the interests of all people. Like everything else, radio has undergone a process of evolution and adaptation: one of the most important advances in communications is the transition from amplitude modulation (AM) to frequency modulation (FM). This led to the digital revolution, which allowed an improvement in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector and progress in the quality of services and an increase in their diversity. Therefore, over time, FM has been subject to decline as fewer people listen to it and their age has been increasing, i.e. its use is decreasing and the people who listen to it are older than in the past. In contrast, new phenomena such as podcasting, streaming, DAB, etc. are appearing, so what will be the future of university radio if FM is in decline and may disappear in the coming years? Faced with the new reality, university radio stations should be introducing spaces to develop the teachings around the podcast industry and become sound laboratories, R+D+i with the aim of adapting to the new digital era that befalls them.
