Introduction: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common reason for presentation in emergency services and hospital admission. In the treatment of AGE, optimal management with oral or intravenous fluids is recommended as standard treatment, however, prevention is the key to controlling gastroenteritis. Regarding that, the promotion of breastfeeding has proven to be an accessible and low-cost public health intervention with great results.
Objective: Measure the impact of exposure to breast milk in reducing the number of gastrointestinal infections, together with the number of consultations in primary care and the number of hospitalizations and/or pediatric emergency admissions during the first year of life. As a secondary objective, to measure how breastfeeding exposure affects the total number of respiratory infections.
Methods: A group of 173 lactating patients have been the subject of this retrospective cohort study during a period of 3 months. The sources of information have been the data obtained from the discharge report of the newborn and the consultation reports.
Results: Children not exposed to breastfeeding consulted for AGE an average of 0.378 times (95% CI [0.197-0.560]), and the exposed children an average of 0.324 (95% CI [0.219-0.429]) (p=0.325). Of the hospitalizations due to gastrointestinal causes, the average number of days of admission in those exposed to breastfeeding was 0.066 (95% CI [-0.031-0.163]), and in those not exposed a mean of 0.270 (95% CI [-0.050-0.591 ])(p= 0.034). Those exposed to breastfeeding had an average of 3,279 visits for IR (95% CI [2,846-3,713]), while those not exposed had an average of 4,459 times (95% CI [3,508-5,411]) (p=0.023).
Conclusions: Our findings regarding gastrointestinal (GI) infections have not shown a protective effect in breastfeeding, but they have in terms of the number of consultations due to a respiratory infection, being the average lower in the group exposed to breastfeeding.
