Forest fires are becoming more and more frequent due to the numerous factors that cause them. Once the fire has occurred, the soil is exposed to erodible agents and the loss of edaphic properties, so it is of vital importance to minimize the damage produced after a forest fire. Post-fire management can be the solution to this problem, although several studies indicate that biocrusts, which are the first colonizers of the soil after a forest fire, can be particularly useful in protecting the edaphic properties of the soil. Therefore, our study aims to compare the effects of mosses on soil fertility under different treatments such as felling and harvesting of wood and mulching in a plantation of Eucalyptos globulus labill in Coimbra, Portugal. For this purpose, the different management methods were compared with soils containing moss and soils without moss, with different properties such as CO, N, P, REB and microbial biomass. Regarding the results, they have not been as expected, since it has been concluded an increase of nutrients in both managements in soils in which biocrustra presence was not detected. Although, there is an increase in the REB value, in soils where there is presence of bicostra in the slash-and-burn treatment. This is also the case for the presence of microbial biomass, where this value increases in soils where moss is present. Finally, in the control of mulching treatment, the values of all edaphic properties increase in soils where biocrustra is present. Finally, an exhaustive study of the role of moss on edaphic properties in different soils after a fire would be advisable, due to the complexity of the study of these organisms.
