The global loss of crop yields is largely caused by plant diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms. The most commonly used method to manage these microorganisms is the use of biocides; however, its use has led to the emergence of resistant pathogens, as well as threats to human health and the environment. Plants synthesize chemical compounds that can be a source of antimicrobial compounds. Certain invasive plants could be an alternative to obtain these compounds, due to their toxic or allelopathic properties.
In this study, the antibacterial and antifungal capacity of four plant species, Acacia farnesiana, Caesalpinia gilliesii, Carpobrotus edulis and Mirabilis jalapa, was studied. Plant extracts were prepared with Ethanol plus benzalkonium chloride, acetone, methanol and pure ethanol to evaluate their antifungal activity against 4 fungi (Alternaria sp., Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora citrophthora and Fusarium sp.) and antibacterial activity against 3 bacteria (Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus epidermidis).
Results varied depending on the plant, extractant and fungus/bacterial species. In general, Acacia farnesiana, Caesalpinia gilliesii y Mirabilis jalapa exhibited antimicrobial activity in many cases whereas Carpobrotus edulis showed lower antifungal or antibacterial activity.
