Background and aims:
Treatment with luminal apposition metal stents (LAMS) in endoscopy is a novel technique with different indications and a safe and effective alternative to traditional treatments. Its indications include the drainage of pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis of pancreatic origin, non-pancreatic collections, intestinal stenosis and the performance of endoscopic gastrojejunostomies. The main objective of this study is to identify complications and their characteristics for each of these indications. Secondarily, the characteristics of the population, the technical and clinical success and the variables that can condition therapeutic failure or complications were also studied.
Methods:
Single-center retrospective study with a review of the cases treated at the General University Hospital of Alicante from 2016 to 2021 by the Digestive Medicine Service. Data from patient histories were collected and, through the IBM SPSS Statistics program, a database was created from which descriptive and analytical studies were carried out.
Results:
Of the 148 cases studied, complications appeared in 28 of them (18.9%) and technical success was achieved in 141 (95.3%), while clinical success was achieved in 124 (83.8%). Differences were found in the occurrence of complications according to the indication, being higher in the case of non-pancreatic collections, technical success was achieved less for gastrojejunostomies and clinical success was achieved in an equivalent manner. There were 2 serious and 2 fatal complications, the rest being less relevant.
Conclusions:
LAMS techniques represent a safe and effective alternative for the indications studied, achieving placement in a high percentage of cases, with good clinical results and easy-to-manage complications.
