Through the synthesis and review of several previous studies and articles, information has been collected in this work about how Animal Assisted Therapy (also known as Zootherapy) works in people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Zootherapy is an innovative therapeutic alternative that has the help of different animals depending on the needs of the treatment. It is a complementary therapy that provides obvious improvements at the physical, cognitive and emotional levels, influencing also other areas such as social, sensory, or educational. Generally, these animal-assisted therapies are usually applied in geriatric centers, day centers and hospitals in the case of Alzheimer’s patients, since they are aimed at elderly people. But they can also be activities that are done outdoors or in the water.
This work aims to investigate the origin of animal therapies, their benefits and specifically how they are applied in people with Alzheimer’s.
