Introduction: Recent studies have recommended developing educative programs that promote realistic stereotypes about elderly people in order to decrease ageism attitudes and behaviours. The Acompaña-Té program is a university volunteering course divided in a theoretical and a practical training that was designed to eliminate this prejudice and raise awareness about the problems that elderly population have to face when they are lonely.Here we aim to assess the effectiveness of the theoretical training of the “Acompaña-Té” program in decreasing the negative stereotypes on ageing in a group of university students. Method: A pre-post design with control group was carried out, in which40 people participated (n=20 GE, n=20 GC). The negative stereotypes were evaluated through the Questionnaire of Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age (CENVE). To check the changes in the stereotypes after the intervention, comparisons of means were made with the Student's t-test for related samples.Results: In the EG negative stereotypes were reduced significantly after training (t=-3.573; p=.002), especially in the Healthand Character-personalitydimensions, estimating that 40% of the changes observed inCENVE scores are explained by the training received; whereas in the CG no statistically significant changes were observed.Conclusions: The “Acompaña-Té” is effective in reducing ageism in university students. This type of program helps to create more inclusive societies and it would be desirable to promote this training in similar educational contexts
