Introduction. In Spain, Professional Music Education is one of the disciplines with the highest drop-out rate. This may be due to excessive anxiety or lack of family support and motivation. Although this problem is widespread, there are hardly any studies that deal with it. The aim of this study was to find out about the psychological and emotional experience of students at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Alicante in terms of reconciling their studies and making decisions about their future. Methodology. Observational cross-sectional study based on qualitative methodology. Two focus groups were carried out with active students (n=8) and teachers (n=26) and former students (n=58) were surveyed to explore motives for studying and dropping out, positive aspects, barriers to the reconciliation of studies and desirable support resources. The ideas identified were categorised and their spontaneity elicited. Results. The greatest difficulties in reconciling studies were lack of time, high demands and lack of understanding from teachers. The reasons for dropping out, according to students, were lack of time, stress, high demands and not feeling validated; according to teachers: lack of time and motivation. Suggestions for improvement included improving the guidance department in the conservatoires and providing classes to learn to play in public. Discussion. Work-life balance difficulties are a widespread problem among music students and often lead to students dropping out of their studies. A cost-effectiveness analysis of the different intervention proposals available is needed.
