Moral panics, characterized by being disproportionate reactions to the empirical incidence of certain social events, attract much media attention and carry significant repercussions at the social, political and legislative level. In order to better understand this phenomenon, the present study develops a systematic review with the general purpose of knowing the current state of the empirical literature on moral panics with a criminological interest in the last five years, and with the specific purposes of (1) identifying the most common characteristics of empirical studies, (2) perceiving the most studied constitutive behaviors of moral panics, (3) knowing the most researched focus of study and (4) capturing the most associated factors. With a sample made up of 28 studies, the results indicate that more than half of the studies are carried out in the United States and England; that there is no a predominant discipline in its study, although criminology is the one that is most repeated; that most are based on a non-experimental design and a qualitative or mixed approach; that the nature of the behaviors is diverse, although sexual crimes and immigration are the most studied behaviors; and that the media are the most researched focus of study and the most associated factor.
