Pain is a symptom caused by a wide variety of diseases and has
a significant impact on quality of life. The diagnosis of chronic pain related
pathologies is much more frequent in women and consistent differences have
been observed between both sexes regarding the perception, description and
expression of pain. These differences could be explained in part by social factors
such as gender, a sociocultural construct that determines behavioral
expectations and characteristics of masculinity and femininity. Gender norms and
stereotypes are present in health care, which can lead to gender bias, i.e.,
differences in the treatment of men and women that are not medically motivated.
The specific causes that contribute to gender biases in pain management in
clinical practice and in the patient-physician encounter have not been
investigated so far. Objective: to describe the differences between men and women in the
prevalence and management of moderate and limiting pain for the performance
of usual activities in the non-institutionalized Spanish adult population.Material and Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study with analytical
components is performed from individualized secondary data collected in the
2017 National Health Survey (NHS) and the 2020 Spanish European Health
Survey (EESE), being the study population the one corresponding to the target
population of both surveys. The main dependent variables relating to the
prevalence of moderate-limiting pain and its management (number of analytical
tests, number of imaging tests performed and number of referrals to the
specialist) are configured from the data available from the surveys. Subsequently,
a descriptive and multivariate analysis was carried out, disaggregated by sex and
adjusted for social and health variables.
