Introduction: preterm birth triggers anxiety and concern, provoking a clash between the reality and the idea of giving birth that has been created during the pregnancy period. This makes postpartum a risky phase for the development of postpartum depression among those women who experience early deliveries. Methodology: the main objective of this project is to analyse the effect of a preterm birth at risk of developing postpartum depression. This is an observational, analytical, prospective cohort study. The subjects of the study will be literate women between 18 and 35 years old who have desired and controlled pregnancies and give birth to live babies at the Hospital General Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca (Area I, Murcia). Once the sample has been chosen, each cohort will be allocated a participant depending on the gestational age, resulting in the exposed cohort, formed by women who give birth before the 37th week of pregnancy, and the non-exposed cohort, formed by those women with deliveries at term. Practical implementation: once the study has been proposed and carried out, two scenes could be considered. In the first case, the patient does not present a postpartum depression disorder, so the interventions would entail continuing with the postpartum care according to the Assistance for Women Comprehensive Plan. In the second case, after the evaluation using the Edinburgh Scale and the midwife’s examination, the woman is at risk of developing a postpartum depression disorder. Given this result, the main practical implementation would be to establish track care and patient referral for early detection and early intervention.
