Sleep-related bruxism is an unconscious oral habit that occurs during sleep and causes rhythmic contraction of the masticatory musculature and also myotonic activity that culminates in teeth wear and destruction of the dental structures, leading to serious comorbidities. Among the risk factors cited are OSAHS, the intake of different drugs, and psychoemotional factors such as stress, anxiety, depression and poor sleep quality. The role of the latter has been studied since the middle of the last century with mixed results. On the other hand, prevalence studies offer highly variable data, and there are few data at the local and regional levels. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, an increase in cases of sleep bruxism has been noted, and diagnoses of affective disorders have increased or worsened. It is feasible that, as a consequence of social isolation and lockdown due to the infection, profound changes have occurred at a psychoemotional level that have influenced in the appearance of new cases of bruxism. Based on this hypothesis, we propose an observational, analytical, case-control study with 406 rural volunteers from Cartagena health system area, with a confidence level of 95% and an estimated error of 5%: 203 patients properly diagnosed with sleep bruxism since the beginning of the pandemic situation and 203 healthy controls from the same population. The aim is to evaluate the presence or absence of COVID-19 infection in both groups, as well as anxiety, depression, perceived stress and sleep quality by means of self-administered and validated psychometric questionnaires, in addition to sociodemographic variables. Bivariate statistical analysis will be performed using Pearson χ2 test, Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. The measure of association will be the OR.
