Tobacco use is the largest preventable public health problem and
the leading cause of preventable disease in our country. Quitting smoking
produces great improvement in health and quality of life. Therefore, it is very
important that policy makers and health care professionals support smoking
cessation and that the therapeutic adherence to the pharmacological treatment
taken by the patient is well monitored in order to achieve adequate abstinence.
Objective: The main objective is to determine the pharmacological adherence of
patients who wish to quit smoking who are in the preparation stage and who
belong to a smoking cessation treatment program at the Coll d'en Rabassa Health
Center.
Material and methods: This is a longitudinal prospective descriptive
observational study. We will select all patients who request help to quit smoking,
who are in the preparation phase and who have been prescribed pharmacological treatment. The follow-up period will be 6 months. The main study variable is
adherence to the prescribed pharmacological treatment and will be collected by
counting the number of tablets or patches. Good adherence will be considered if
the patient takes between 80% and 110% of the prescribed medication,
hypoadherence if less than 80% and hyperadherence if more than 110%.
Depending on the treatment taken by the patient, 4 to 6 face-to-face visits will be
made to the nursing or medical office, and blood cooximetry and cotinine levels
will be measured to assess abstinence once treatment has been completed.
