Esclavas de la memoria develops important moments about the most recent History of Spain, in collaboration with the associations that have helped and continue to do so over the victims of the franquismo in their battle for freedom and democracy.
This Podcast about Historical Memory places the audience in 1939, time when the Nacionalist side won the Spanish Civil War. Not long after the victory, and the establishment of the dictatorship, it began a period of continued repression towards 1945, and intermittently until 1975. With the support of Europe over a fascist tyranny, in Spain begins an oblivion time that will allocate the society of the 21st century in a total unknowledge over their past. Despite the death of the dictator, Francisco Franco Beamonte, and the arrival of the democracy, the victims of the Spanish Civil War and the franquismo will remain invisible to the State.
The start of a new Century turns the history around with two important episodes. In 2000, Emilio Silva achieves the first public exhumation in a little village situated in León, northwestern Spain. The results come with the discover of 13 executed people in 1936, Los trece de Priaranza. After this historical event, a part of that society doomed to live in silence started to speak out. The event in Priaranza del Bierzo, León, also promotes the creation of an association in care of the victims, the Association for Recovery of the Historical Memory, driving the victims to the battle on the knowledge of the truth.
And to continue the battle, the Cemetery of Alicante takes the first excavation with scientific methods, for the exhumation and identification of 11 executed people in May of 1940. A small grave that pretends to be the first of the more of 20 that this piece of land holds.
