The general aim of this experimental work is, by performing different tests of composting at real scale, to determine the most suitable mixture of sewage sludge and bulking agent (crushed vegetal waste and splinter of pallets) for the obtaining of a final product -compost- which meets the quality parameters demanded by the regulations in force about fertilizers, with the maximum efficiency of the process regarding performance in the treatment of sewage sludge.
In order to reach the objective set, five real scale tests are designed of composting of sewage sludge with different mixtures and proportions of bulkin agent.
The experimental design followed consists of: initial characterization of the waste; approach to the mixtures to be composted; composting in trenches with forced aeration and covered with a semipermeable membrane which allows transpiration by holding back gases which can cause bad smells and isolating the system of adverse climatological agents; control and analysis of the essential parameters for the correct development of the process and the related to the substration nature, by taking samples that are characterized in four stages of the process: beginning, half of the fermentation phase, start of the maduration and final compost. The final conclusion is that, of the five tests of co-composting of sewage sludge with two kinds of bulkin agent in different proportions, from the mixture of Test 2, consisting of 3 volumes of wood splinter by 2 volumes of purifying plant sludge, the maximum efficiency was obtained regarding performance of sewage sludge treated, accomplishing in the final compost the quality parameters demanded by the regulations in force about fertilizers
