The audiovisual distribution business model has been forced to reformulate in the face of the emergence of COVID-19. The traditional formula and the commercialization scheme followed by Hollywood distributors or majors has clashed with the difficulty to make products profitable in the first window of theaters due, among other factors, to the closure of theaters and the worldwide confinement measures.
The following Final Degree Project carries out an analysis of the strategies assumed by the majors since the outbreak of the pandemic, as well as an in-depth analysis of the use of digital channels to distribute products by the studios. Interviews with experts also allow this research to outline a future perspective beyond the pandemic in the future of audiovisual distribution.
In this way, this work focuses on the changing nature of Hollywood's commercial scheme over the last year, which has reformulated and rethought its traditional exhibition channel to give way to disruptive formulas thanks to the prioritization of windows such as streaming platforms. Although the future of this market is still difficult to predict, studios have embraced the new marketing channels and have incorporated them into their business model, despite the progressive return to the first or theatrical window.
Therefore, COVID-19 has been a revolution within the audiovisual industry, with changes in the commercial scheme of films and has brought with it opportunities and challenges for entertainment companies. The combination of the digital formula with the traditional windows, as well as the boom and focus on streaming are some characteristics that the pandemic has accelerated and that point to remain even in a situation of return to normality.
