Introduction. Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that affects 24.3 million people
worldwide. Non-Pharmacological Therapies (TNF) as a complementary treatment to
pharmacological therapy are currently at the peak. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is the
TNF with the greatest benefits demonstrated in the cognitive functions and in the quality of life
of people with dementia.
Objetive. Review existing scientific evidence on ECT used in people with dementia, examine
their interventions and describe the characteristics of the most commonly used CST programs in
dementia.
Patients and Methods. A bibliographic search was made in the PubMed, Scielo, OTseeker,
Dialnet, Cuiden Plus, Psicodoc and Dialnet databases of full text intervention studies published
in Spanish or English between 2006 and 2017. The relevant data were collected With respect to
the different interventions and programs, and their most relevant characteristics.
Results. We analyzed 16 articles, where they used CST in dementia. The studies demonstrated
that through this strategy benefits are obtained in the cognition and quality of life of people with
dementia
Conclusions. ECT is a promising intervention strategy from Occupational Therapy, and has
been shown to be effective in the treatment of dementia.
