Introduction: The use made of aquatic therapy (AT) by occupational therapists and
other professionals is increasingly widespread, but it is a type of intervention that has
not yet been incorporated in the field of rehabilitation, however , more and more a wide
range of possibilities is opening up regarding the variety of activities that can be carried
out with this type of therapy.
Objective: To know the effects of the use of aquatic therapy as an intervention method
for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from some type of brain damage (CD).
Material and method: Bibliographic review of articles related to the use of AT in the
rehabilitation of patients with CD. The PubMed and Medline databases have been used.
Most articles are clinical trials and studies performed on patients who have suffered DC
or sequelae.
Results: 8 articles were analyzed, most of them focused on the use of AT for the
treatment of DC. The results obtained can be considered disparate, but in general they
point to improvements in motor control, cognitive performance, social skills, basic
activities of daily life, etc.
Conclusions: There is scientific evidence in a contrasted way that supports the
effectiveness of the use of AT as a method of intervention in the rehabilitation of
patients with CD. However, because it is a relatively new method, it would be
appropriate to continue and deepen with the investigation to check, for example, if the
changes produced by this type of intervention are sustained in the long term.
