El papel del terapeuta ocupacional en la escuela: Visión del estudiante de Terapia Ocupacional mediante la técnica Fotovoz

Abstract

La técnica Fotovoz, es una metodología de investigación-acción participativa que favorece un proceso de conocimiento crítico sobre las necesidades del contexto, generando una reflexión y proponiendo un deseo de transformación social y política. En este sentido, el presente estudio ha tenido como objetivo explorar el rol del terapeuta ocupacional dentro del ámbito educativo, aunque esta figura, dada la ausencia de reconocimiento profesional en esta área, resulta prácticamente desconocida en España. Asimismo, consideramos interesante conocer la visión de los estudiantes de Terapia Ocupacional acerca de este tema cuyo futuro laboral podría desarrollarse en la escuela. Participaron 5 estudiantes (dos hombres y tres mujeres) de tercer curso del grado de Terapia Ocupacional, pertenecientes a la Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche. Se realizaron diferentes reuniones para capacitar a los estudiantes con la técnica fotovoz. Tras varias semanas, se contactó con los participantes para la presentación de fotografías y discusión de resultados. Se identificaron 3 temas principales relacionados con la función del terapeuta ocupacional en la escuela: el material escolar como elemento principal para realizar modificaciones y adaptaciones adecuadas que favorezcan el aprendizaje; las barreras tanto arquitectónicas como de ocio y tiempo libre; y la educación o intervención con las familias. En el presente estudio los estudiantes de Terapia Ocupacional señalaron que el terapeuta ocupacional juega un papel importante en la escuela. Son necesario futuros estudios sobre el papel de estos profesionales para poder diseñar estrategias adecuadas que ayuden a su incorporación y reconocimiento como figura profesional en el entorno educativo.

Photovoice is a participatory action research methodology that favours a process of critical knowledge about the needs of the context, producing a critical thought for the purpose of social and political change. In this sense, the present study has aimed to explore the occupational therapist’s role within the field of education, although of this figure, given the lack of professional recognition in this area, is almost unknown in Spain. Likewise, we considered of interest to know the occupational therapy students’ view on this issue whose future work career could be developed within school. Five Occupational Therapy students (two men and three women) from the third year course from Miguel Hernández University in Elche participated. Different workshops were run to train students in the photovoice technique. After several weeks, participants were contacted for the presentation of the photographs and the discussion of the findings. Three main issues were identified with the occupational therapist’s role in school: the school material as the main element to make modifications and adaptations suitable for learning; the architectural and leisure/free time barriers; and the family education or intervention. In the present study the occupational therapy students indicated that the occupational therapist plays an important role in school. Further studies on the role of these professionals are required in order to design appropriate to help them in the integration and recognition as a professional figure into the field of education.
