Introduction: The inflammation of the plantar aponeurosis is a frequent condition which is characterized by a painful foot, particularly at the level of the calcaneus. Plantar fasciitis is a very common cause of heel pain that can be triggered and aggravated by prolonged standing, walking, running and obesity, among other factors. Regarding its prevalence, it’s estimated that more than 1 million visits to the healthcare professionals are made every year. Due to this, the main objective of this study arose: to determine the effect of dry needling on myofascial trigger points associated with the pain of plantar fasciitis. Objective: We want to determine the effectiveness of dry needling in myofascial trigger points associated with the pain of plantar fasciitis. Material and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in the PubMed database based on the following inclusion criteria: 1) The articles included are those published date from 2007 to 2017; 2) The accepted languages were English and Spanish; 3) Metaanalyzes, systematic reviews and randomized controlled clinical trials were accepted. Results: Only 4 articles were selected after the inclusion criteria. There were 2 systematic review articles that found limited evidence of the effectiveness of dry needling for the treatment of plantar fasciitis, however, the poor quality of the included trials and their heterogeneous nature preclude these conclusions from being definitive, 1 clinical trial randomized controlled trial that shows that the puncture has beneficial effects on the reduction of pain associated with plantar fasciitis and 1 Meta-analysis that shows a reduction in pain after the use of dry needling. Discussion: There are studies that show the reduction of pain occasioned to plantar fasciitis through the use of dry needling. However, the poor quality and the heterogeneous sample of the studies confirm the need for good quality trials. Conclusions: According to the information obtained in our work, dry needling is effective to treat pain in the heel associated with plantar fasciitis, although it’s necessary to perform future trials of better quality to corroborate it’s effectiveness.
