The armed conflict in the Republic of Colombia is a confrontation that has lasted
approximately 60 years and its main actors have been the extreme left guerrillas (FARC
or ELN), paramilitary groups and the Colombian government. To these violent fronts
were added, including drug cartels and criminal gangs.
With very diverse causes such as the old confrontation between liberal and conservative
forces or social inequalities in the deep areas of the territory, among many others, this
war had its beginning in 1960 and it was intensifying over the years until it was considered
one of the longest and bloodiest in recent history.
It has millions of deaths and disappearances under its belt and pending cases that to this
day remain unsolved. In the same way as so many others, it has left thousands of families
affected and continues to expose its consequences in the functioning of Colombian
society today.
This research aims to study the role that journalism has played and continues to play as a
profession or trade in the armed conflict in this South American country. In addition, it is
analyzed how communicators, media and communication processes have influenced the
thread of events that occurred chronologically throughout the war and the responsibilities
that journalism professionals have had in the succession of events that took place internal
level but also with respect to Colombia's international relations, in order to avoid or
detonate government crises, and to facilitate or hinder the last peace process that began
in 2012 and ended in 2016.
Finally, this project ends with some reflections on the power exercised by journalists as
individuals and the media over the decisions of governments and the counterpart in the
midst of crises. In addition to the responsibility that professionals in this area have when
carrying out their work to promote peaceful coexistence in any country in the world.
