The current global crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic has had consequences in all dimensions of society and has become, at a scientific level, a phenomenon worthy of study for the social sciences.
In this research work we will shed light on how this crisis has affected the criminal sphere, focusing specifically on traffic crime and using the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a sample through the data provided by the Local Police Department.
Starting from the criminological theories on the opportunity for crime, our hypothesis is that road crime should have decreased in 2020 as a consequence of the restriction on freedom of movement and leisure limitation. However, the result of the data analysis shows us a different reality than expected and it will be through a study of police effectiveness that we will be able to explain that road crime records in 2020 have been maintained at the levels of previous years.
