Tropical fruits in general have a short shelf life, mainly due to the dehydration and softening that these fruits undergo during postharvest storage. Refrigeration is a useful tool for preserving tropical fruits; however, despite the benefits that low temperatures have on shelf life, they tend to cause physiological disorders in tropical fruits in general and in avocados. The high sensitivity of avocados to low temperatures results in significant damage to both the skin and the interior of the fruit. In the skin, the collapse of tissues increases weight loss, making the commercialization impossible, as well as internal browning caused by refrigeration. In this study, we evaluated the effect on the reduction of these damages by different treatments applied to avocados stored at suboptimal temperatures (5°C). For this purpose, we compared the extension of shelf life by the application of artificial synthetic substances or by the application of compounds of natural origin, both with efficient proven activity against the alterations that low temperatures can cause in other vegetable products. The treatments applied independently improved several parameters of the general quality of the fruit compared to the controls during storage, also controlling the incidence of damage caused by the cold storage tested. In addition, the natural elicitors applied increased the content of bioactive compounds present in these fruits compared to controls or those treated with substances of artificial origin. Therefore, the use of compounds of natural origin could replace compounds of artificial origin widely used in the commercialization of these fruits, improving sustainability, since these compounds are native to plant tissues.
