Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit has interesting nutritional and functional properties due to a wide array of bioactive compounds, although they can be reduced, as well as other quality parameters, after long storage periods. Melatonin has recently been recognized as a plant hormone capable of regulating various physiological functions in plants. In this work, three different concentrations of melatonin were used (0.1 mM, 0.3 mM and 0.5 mM) and applied as pre-harvest treatment to evaluate their effect on quality traits of ‘Mollar de Elche’ cultivar. The effects of these treatments on different quality parameters (soluble solid content, titratable acidity and firmness) and phytochemical compounds beneficial to health (anthocyanins and polyphenols) during storage of 60 days at 10ºC were investigated. All melatonin concentrations improved the studied parameters with respect to control fruit, being the pomegranates from the treatment with the lowest concentration (0.1 mM) those that showed the highest phenolic, anthocyanin and soluble solids content, as well as greater firmness and titratable acidity. Thus, foliar spray melatonin application maintained an improved quality parameters and bioactive compounds in ‘Mollar de Elche’ pomegranate after storage for two months at 10 ºC. This strategy could be of interest in other pomegranate cultivars and/or other fruit species, although further research is needed.
