Resumen : The EU is founded on certain values such as respect for human rights,
democracy and the rule of law. The respect and protection of these values, both
internally and in its external actions, constitute its hallmark. However, in recent
years, these values have been threatened from within and from outside. The serious
and repeated violations of the principles of the rule of law in some Member States
such as Poland, Hungary and, more recently, Slovakia, as well as the difficult situa-
tion in the international landscape, pose significant challenges that the EU must face
with firmness and determination. Is it prepared to do so? Does it have adequate
mechanisms to deal with violations of its founding values? This chapter analyses

Resumen : Este trabajo aborda el análisis de las concordancias que existieron en derecho romano entre el poder que se ejercía en el ámbito privado de la familia y en el público de la civitas. En ambos espacios, el examen de las fuentes presenta que la autoridad se desenvolvió de manera similar, sirviendo a juristas y autores literarios como paradigma recíproco de poder. La evolución culmina con la proyección de la figura del paterfamilias en la esfera pública, adoptando los cargos políticos el título de pater patriae. De esta forma, se empleará la familia como símbolo del poder imperial, presentándose sus titulares como protectores de los ciudadanos, al igual que haría un padre con sus hijos.; This work analyzes the parallels that existed in Roman law between the power exercised in the private sphere of the family and in the public sphere of the civitas. Authority was exercised in both spheres in a similar manner, serving jurists and literary authors as a reciprocal paradigm of power. This evolution culminated in the projection of the figure of the paterfamilias into the public sphere, where the title of pater patriae was adopted by important political figures to present themselves to society as protectors of the citizens.2026-05-04T18:55:02Z
