Nutrition and food are subjects that are increasingly important for people and families, so their dissemination through the media should be done in the most appropriate way to avoid creating confusion and alarm among the population.
In the present study an analysis will be carried out on the treatment and coverage given to nutrition news by two of the most important newspapers in the country: ABC and El País, using their digital versions. In a first quantitative analysis, the information related to nutrition was counted, finding a similar figure between both newspapers.
Thus, ABC has published a total of 42 news of which 24% have to do with recommendations on food and diets. For its part, El País has spread 44 news stories, of which 20% are also related to food recommendations, being thus in both newspapers the most important issue. On the other hand, the qualitative analysis has shown that, in the two periodicals, similar errors are made in the literal wording. However, the most important mistake was that half of the news considered do not have any type of infographic. Regarding the origin of their information, both newspapers support a third of their news and articles on nutrition in sources in the industrial and agri-food sector.
The newspapers try to transmit information avoiding the alarm and give a wide view of the food and the diets. Through this study will also propose a series of measures to improve the coverage of nutrition news.
