There are a wide variety of researches about the efficacy treatments to achieve smoking cessation. However, for smokers with COPD, there is a lack of literature and it is essential to study what kind of treatments are more appropriate for these patients. Consequently, and taking into account the low abstinence rates in this group of smokers, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of brief psychotherapy in a clinical trial suffering from COPD to stop smoking. Based on the Guide-self Change model, it’s combined with varenicline drug, at the General University Hospital of Alicante (GUHA). The pharmacological intervention was provided by a Doctor specialized in the pneumology area of GUHA. The psychological intervention was carried out over four 45 minutes' weekly sessions by a trained psychologist. Its main goals were to encourage changing strategies to decrease the ambivalence, reduce tobacco usage and prevent relapses. Motivational Interviewing (MI), Relapse Prevention (RP) and other techniques derived from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) were used. At the end of the treatment the patient quit tobaccoand high levels of motivation and self-efficacy were observed. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intervention was effective in this clinical trial. The implications of these outcomes for smoking cessation treatment in smokers with COPD are discussed.es
